Melloney Poole has been promoted from her position at Portsmouth Hospitals Trust as a non-executive director and will replace Sir Ian, who left this summer to take up a position in the emerging Hampshire accountable care system.
Ms Poole has a background in corporate, charity and public administrative law after spending 25 years working as a solicitor.
She has been a non-executive director in the NHS since 1993 and is vice chair of The Health Foundation.
Portsmouth has one of the worst performing emergency departments in England and was forced to revise its financial plan last month due to “significant slippage”.
Ms Poole said: “The trust has some very significant challenges but there is a lot of hard work going on and I have been struck by the passion and professionalism of the staff.”
She will formally start as chair on 1 November.
Trust chief executive Mark Cubbon said Ms Poole would bring a “wealth of experience across both public and private sectors”.
Sir Ian left his position at the trust after three years in the role.18
