Job Type

Want to help shape the relationships and processes that mean we can deliver our strategic objectives, making a difference to the lives of millions of people who use our services? This role leads the development and implementation of our strategic direction and annual business plans, working across health and social care economies and within national contexts to ensure we deliver the best clinical services possible in a sustainable fashion.

This is an executive director opportunity within one of the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust employs circa 16,700 staff across five hospital sites and numerous community-based settings.

With an annual budget of over £1 billion we provide a full range of local hospital and community services for people in Sheffield, as well as specialist care for patients from further afield, including cancer, spinal cord injuries, renal and cardiothoracic services.

As a member of the Shelford Group which represents the ten leading NHS multi-speciality academic healthcare organisations we have a long history of high quality care, clinical excellence and innovation. We strive to promote a culture of continuous quality improvement, have a tradition of clinical and scientific achievement and through our partnerships with the University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, other health and social care providers and industry we remain at the forefront of advancements in clinical services, teaching and research.

However, to maintain and build upon our success we have to ensure we are excelling at how we develop our strategies and deliver our plans, encouraging strong and trusting working relationships with commissioners and service providers, being entrepreneurial yet judicious in our capital planning and investment, and acting in a commercial fashion to maximise our opportunities.

Joining a highly effective board you will have personal credibility, professional gravitas, strong influencing skills and the ability to provide clarity of thought and strategic vision in a fast-paced, pressured and changing environment.

We are seeking someone who has significant leadership experience and expert knowledge of contracting, planning and policy development. Comprehensive knowledge of policy agenda and contractual mechanisms in the NHS and the delivery of large and complex projects are essential. The post-holder will have a demonstrable track-record of describing and evaluating strategic options, the ability to innovate and be creative, highly-honed negotiation skills and the ability to sell a vision and build consensus for change and delivery.

We are seeking the sorts of skills, experiences and personal qualities that would have already marked you out as an exceptional professional, someone who can align their evident intellectual abilities to our Trust values (PROUD - Patients First, Respectful, Ownership, Unity and Delivery) to be powerful change agent who can comfortably operate at board-level in one of the United Kingdom’s leading teaching hospital trusts.

In return we can offer a unique opportunity to be part of an amazing organisation that has an impact on the lives of many, shaping and delivering our strategic direction, ensuring we remain a highly effective and successful provider of healthcare services.
