Director of Culture and People
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides local general hospital and community services to around 260,000 people in Walsall and the surrounding areas. We are a truly integrated healthcare provider covering Walsall and beyond, with multidisciplinary acute and community services that allow us to provide the right care in the right place; such as rapid response in the community and homebased care so that those with long term conditions and the frail elderly can remain in their own homes to be cared for. We provide the full range of district general hospital services in Walsall Manor Hospital and we provide high quality, friendly and effective community health services and from some 60 sites including health centres and GP surgeries.
Our recent journey has been one of turnaround and reconfiguration, following the CQC’s inspection of us in September 2015. With a great deal of effort and energy we have now tackled the short-term challenges highlighted by their report and, having turned the corner, we have begun to focus on changes that enhance our longer-term plans. The CQC have recently re-inspected us, their initial feedback was encouraging and we await further news with interest.
This important role will join us at a time where our focus is shifting from the short-term to the longer term, from immediate challenges to more strategic issues about our role in the wider health and care economy as well to making sustainable change in the way we work together as trust. We know we cannot deliver on our strategy along and, we are active partners in many collaborative ventures in the area such as the Black Country Alliance and Walsall Together.
In this new role, you will lead a high-visibility, high-impact OD programme that develops the Trust, our culture and our people to establish a clinically-led, engaged and empowered organisation. Part of your remit is to establish a clear values-based approach to leadership, embedding a strong staff Health & Well Being strategy, and maintaining strong and inclusive arrangements with staff side representatives.
Building on our Listening into Action journey, you will support executive colleagues in the development of a vision and culture that strives to improve engagement with patients and their relatives and continuously improves the experience of our patients. To succeed in this role, you will need experience as a senior manager within a large complex organisation at, or reporting to, Board level. Prior NHS experience is not required but a track record of major change within a patient or customer facing organisation will be needed. You must be able to define and deliver an HR strategy and be equally capable of operational leadership.
You will join an organisation with a clear sense of the added value we provide into our communities, and a senior team that is focused on sustainability and innovation, not on the short-term demands of turnaround. We have got off to a strong start on our journey but we know we still have a long way to go to deliver our vision to become your partners for first class integrated care.
If the opportunity to join an integrated organisation and an energised senior team interests you, please click on 'Apply' and contact Robin Staveley of GatenbySanderson on 0113 205 6097 for a confidential discussion.
Closing date: Tuesday 10th October, preliminary interviews late October, final interviews Monday 13th November.
