Managing Director, General Hospital and Ambulance Service
Jersey is a Crown Dependency and, with a population of c 100,000, the largest of the Channel Islands. We are not part of the UK, and the Health & Social Services Department is not part of the NHS, although we work closely with parts of it, and nor is it subject to Department of Health oversight. We have a tax funded health system that is largely free at the point of delivery and yet, despite our health system having some similarities to the NHS, ours is a uniquely integrated health and care system.
Although there are some obvious attractions to working in a location as stunning as Jersey, this role’s main appeal is the leadership and strategic challenges it presents. You will be leading all hospital and ambulance services in an integrated care system that is undergoing radical change to fit the needs of Jersey in the 21st century. This transformation includes the building of a new state of the art General Hospital with a planned opening date in 2024. The Future Hospital development will form a significant element of your working week as you will assume the role of ‘senior user’ within the project team and be the lead for advice on appropriate engagement and sign off at the various stages in the programme.
As a key member of the Health & Social Services senior leadership team you will report to the HSSD Chief Executive and work closely with other departments across the States of Jersey, as well as with external partners in the third sector, the NHS and beyond. To succeed in this role, you need a strong background as a board-level acute Chief Operating Officer and experience of capital projects; you will also need experience of working strategically, a track record of developing excellent relationships with clinicians, and the ability to lead complex clinical and operational services through significant change.
In return we can offer a role with significant autonomy. All the components of a health and social care system are here to work with and, in an environment where there is a greater and closer interaction with political processes than in the UK, this is an excellent opportunity to lead and develop this key part of a genuinely integrated system. The role presents a challenging breadth of operational and strategic challenges, but it is also an opportunity to utilise your system leadership skills.
If the exciting and ambitious leadership challenge we offer if of interest to you, please visit our website for further information and call Robin Staveley of GatenbySanderson on 0113 205 6292 for a confidential discussion.
Closing date: Monday 30th October, preliminary interviews (UK) early November, final interviews (Jersey) late November.
