The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England, tasked with ensuring its health and social care services provide people with safe, effective, compassionate, and high-quality care, as well as continually encouraging services to improve. The work the CQC does really matters. CQC has built a strong reputation as a credible regulator of health and social care providers. To maintain and build on our credibility, the CQC will need to transform the way it works through significant investment in digital, data science and quality improvement capabilities. There are ambitious plans for new technology to play an ever more important part in adapting to the changing nature of service provision.
You will lead an organisation of some 3,300 staff spread across a number of sites and homebased working, and manage a budget of c. £217m. People who work at CQC are vital to its success so you will be a leader who can engage, motivate and inspire people to give their best for the benefit of patients and service users. Securing the trust of the public in the activities, judgements and effectiveness of CQC whilst simultaneously building influential and collaborative relationship with other systems leaders, such as NHS England, NHS Improvement, Health and Social Care providers, and the Local Government Association, is essential.
This is a demanding, high profile, public facing, and politically sensitive role. You will be used to leading in a highly complex environment, with a track record of driving change, and the political sensitivity to relate to a diverse range of stakeholders. Experience of driving a transformation agenda will be important. Clearly, a background in health and/or social care, local government and/or the wider public sector would be particularly relevant. Above all else, personal integrity and the independence of thought and mind necessary to be a regulator, will single you out as the successful candidate.
