CEO takes over third trust

A chief executive is taking over a third trust as part of a move to a city-wide group model.

James Sumner, who leads Liverpool University Hospitals and Liverpool Women’s foundation trusts, will become CEO of Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital FT (LHCHFT) from April this year.

He will succeed Liz Bishop, who announced her retirement last October.

It comes after Liverpool’s five acute and specialist trusts announced they would form a city-wide hospital group – the University Hospitals of Liverpool Group – with LHCHFT joining from 2025-26.

The arrangement means the group will operate with a combined turnover of more than £2bn and employ more than 20,000 staff.

LHCHFT chair Val Davies said: “We welcome James as he brings with him extensive knowledge of the Liverpool health system, an understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, and a wealth of experience in setting direction, embedding innovation, transformation, and developing culture.”

The appointment means LUHFT, LWFT, and LHCHFT will share the same chair and CEO from this spring. David Flory, who chairs the former two, is taking over from Ms Davies at the end of her term in April.

Mr Sumner said: “I am looking forward to joining the team, building on the strong foundations that are established, and supporting colleagues to make a real difference to cardiothoracic care for patients across the region and beyond.”

Ms Bishop was also CEO of Clatterbridge Cancer Centre FT, whose new CEO is Joan Spencer.
