A radiographer has been appointed to run a hospital trust in the South East.

Julie Smith, East and North Hertfordshire Trust’s chief operating officer, will take up the role of chief executive at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals Foundation Trust in May.

She has been COO at East and North Herts for three years but has also worked at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, Cambridge University Hospitals FT and Princess Alexandra Hospital Trust in Harlow. She has moved from jobs managing ultrasound and radiology into more general operational management positions.

She said: “I am thrilled to have been offered the role as chief executive of Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals FT and am looking forward to working with the amazing staff, governors, board and partners to deliver high-quality care to our patients and communities.”

Chair Andy Field added: “Julie’s experience and expertise will help us build on our successes to date, and support the delivery of our vision to provide an outstanding experience and best outcome for patients and the team.”

The trust’s former chief executive Suzanne Rankin left at the end of January to run Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. Medical director David Fluck will continue as interim chief executive until Ms Smith joins.

East and North Herts’ long-standing chief executive Nick Carver retired at the end of last year and Adam Sewell-Jones took on the job.
