Job Type

With over 9,000 staff, St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a large healthcare provider for south west London, Surrey and beyond.

We provide healthcare services for local people, as well as specialist services such as cardiovascular, neuroscience, paediatric, and other tertiary services to a population of over 3.4 million people. We are also home to one London’s four Major Trauma Centres.

The challenges St George’s currently faces are significant. A recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection confirmed significant problems that need addressing, including with our estate at St George’s (Tooting), and our information technology systems. We also need to strengthen our financial and operational performance, enabling us to enhance the quality of care we provide to our patients. We are on an improvement journey, and we are making progress – but we don’t underestimate the challenge we face.

The CMO is a critical post; medical advisor to the Trust Board, the professional lead for all medical staff and in conjunction with the Chief Nurse to lead on quality improvement. This post also acts as a key ambassador for the Trust and will need to work closely with the STP, our local Trusts and to ensure that we are a tertiary organisation that takes its place amongst the best in the UK and beyond. The incumbent will need to develop our research offering and work closely with St George’s University London.

We’re looking for a clinical leader who is equally passionate about improving services for patients and brings a track record of medical management. Someone who inspires confidence through their wise counsel, inspirational leadership, ability to empower others and influence change across organisational boundaries. Most importantly we’re looking for someone who lives our values of being Excellent, Kind, Respectful and Responsible
