The Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB) was established by the Government in 2016. Headed by the Chief Investigator, it is tasked with carrying out independent safety investigations across the healthcare system in England, and became operational from April 2017. HSIB is hosted by NHSI but will maintain its independence both in the conduct and the reporting of its investigations.

The purpose of HSIB is to improve patient safety across the healthcare sector, by carrying out expert investigations to determine the causes of accidents and serious incidents, and to make safety recommendations intended to prevent recurrence. It is not to apportion blame or liability. HSIB will also seek to improve investigation practice across the system.

HSIB have taken responsibility for setting up maternity investigations from April 2018 onwards and this national programme will aim to reduce stillbirth, neonatal death and severe brain injured babies and maternal deaths. HSIB will undertake the most serious maternity investigations using our independent, impartial and standardised process that does not apportion blame or responsibility. HSIB will recruit 100 plus investigators over 2018 and the clinical director and clinical advisors (maternity investigations) will be integral in providing strategic clinical leadership and expert advice to support the maternity programme.

We have several exciting and unique opportunities for a clinical director 3 days/week (minimum) and 4 clinical advisors for up to 2 days/week. We invite applications from senior experienced doctors in obstetrics or a relevant discipline. These posts are offered on a part time, fixed term or secondment basis enabling the candidates to maintain part time clinical practice within their speciality. We can accommodate other working patterns dependent on availability.

These roles are evolving and this will be an excellent opportunity for successful candidates to help shape and support the implementation of the maternity investigations programme.

These are unique and exciting opportunities for established practitioners, with wide experience and a deep understanding of the operation of the NHS and the healthcare system as a whole.

The successful applicants will be experienced, knowledgeable and empathetic, being able to relate to staff at all levels as well as patients and their families. You will have a good knowledge of patient safety, human factors and quality issues, and direct experience of healthcare safety investigations. Successful applicants will act as an ambassador for HSIB at both national and international levels, with the aim of improving and maintaining the confidence of the public, families and healthcare staff in the maternity safety investigation process. We are looking for highly resilient/experienced candidates with excellent communication skills, demonstrating an ability to engage clinicians, managers and members of the public on complex and sensitive issues. You will assist the maternity senior leadership team in establishing and developing effective relationships with the wide range of government, provider, and medical specialist organisations across the English healthcare system.
