The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust is the main provider of acute and specialist care services in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. It serves a population of around 450,000 people, a figure that can increase significantly with visitors during the busiest times of the year. We employ over 5,000 staff and have a budget of around £400 million.

The Trust has teaching hospitals status and works in partnership with the University of Exeter Medical School and the University of Plymouth Faculty of Health and Social Work. The Trust is continually developing its clinical services and is committed to maximising the range of specialist care that can be offered locally. The Trust has a growing reputation for research and innovation. Over the past ten years we have made many important service and environmental improvements.

In October 2017, the Care Quality Commission rated the Trust overall as ‘Inadequate’ after a period of unsatisfactory progress and the time is therefore right to establish a sustained and structured approach to quality and safety through a Trust Improvement Programme.

The largest and most important group of people to help us achieve our goals will be our colleagues. We are seeking to appoint an exceptional Medical Director to join our team and work with us to shape the future direction of clinically-focused services across the Trust and our local system. You will lead the development of our clinical strategy, provide inspirational leadership and direction to our multi-professional clinical workforce and help to ensure that clinical issues drive both our strategic and operational plan and those of the local system. With the Director of Nursing, you will develop and implement effective strategies and systems for robust quality, clinical governance and effectiveness across the organisation.

As part of our Executive Board, you will be integral in our continued development and success. You will support our staff and work closely with the Director of Nursing and Chief Operating Officer to ensure services are safe, high-quality and deliver the right outcomes for patients within the resources at our disposal. You will be responsible for continuously improving standards of professional practice and promoting excellence in the provision of clinical services throughout the Trust and wider system.

Critically, you will play a full Corporate Director role and will be visible and influential externally, contributing effectively to how the Trust operates as an integral part of the local health and care system. As such you will need to combine skilled and values-based leadership, demonstrate strong performance and have an ability to innovate and work across boundaries. We are looking for someone who is passionate, creative, inspirational and visionary.

The successful candidate will also be joining us at a pivotal time as we continue to develop and transform our services for our patients, underpinned by our clear values and our commitment and accountability to our local population and their needs, as well as implementing the continued focus within the NHS Long Term Plan.

This role would suit someone who is already an established Medical Director keen to join a successful, innovative organisation, but equally we would welcome applications from Associate or Deputy Medical Directors, and Clinical Directors running sizeable divisions who can demonstrate experience in clinical management and leadership. In all cases, you will have a genuine passion and interest for patient care, the ability to provide integrated clinical leadership over multiple sites and will also share our aspiration to see services working seamlessly across the health and social care sector.

The closing date for applications is midnight on Monday 13 May with interviews provisionally to be held on Friday 7 June 2019.
