The Chief Operating Officer (COO) for NHS England and NHS Improvement is one of the most senior jobs in the largest publicly funded healthcare system in the world. The role will play a pivotal role in the senior leadership team of the NHS overseeing the provision of health and healthcare services for over 56 million people.

This role is directly accountable to the NHS CEO (Simon Stevens) who leads NHS England and NHS Improvement. For regulatory purposes the postholder is also the nominated NHS Improvement Chief Executive.

The COO will be responsible for leading the implementation of the NHS Long Term Plan and NHS operational delivery, ensuring that NHS England and NHS Improvement develop systems and approaches that support the achievement of the best outcomes for patients. 

The post requires an exceptional individual who can deliver transformational change, within a complex environment. It also requires an individual of proven integrity, who role models values-based leadership and has the track record to command the confidence and trust of NHS staff and leadership, other national health organisations, the Department of Health and Social Care and Government.
