Job Details

We are firmly committed to being the best possible provider of healthcare and place to work in the NHS and we have an exciting opportunity to recruit a new Medical Director to support our progress over the coming years. Andy Haynes, Medical Director and Deputy Chief Executive at Sherwood, has been offered and accepted the important and prestigious role of Executive Lead of the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care System (ICS) and we are looking for a high calibre replacement for him.

Andy first joined us in 2013 and was appointed as our permanent Medical Director in 2014. Andy has given so much to Sherwood and under his leadership we have become a great place to work and receive care. Over the last couple of years Andy has rightfully received regional and national recognition for his work and his leadership has been instrumental in us developing an outstanding culture and delivering safe, high performing patient services. We are fortunate to have benefitted from his immense contribution to patient care over the last six years.

I feel very optimistic about our future at Sherwood. We have been nominated as one of the eight HSJ Trusts of the Year in 2019, our staff engagement scores were the best in the Midlands in 2018 and one of the best in the country, we have a Care Quality Commission assessment early in 2020, which gives us an opportunity to evidence further progress since our “Good” rating in 2018 and our influence is expanding across Nottinghamshire and beyond. Now really is a fantastic time to work at Sherwood. This progress is underpinned by two commitments:

  • We expect all patients to receive the same standard of care we would want our friends and family to have and
  • We expect all colleagues to be treated with the same values we believe are important; support, kindness and respect.

Our new Medical Director will undoubtedly be able to evidence they have the experience and ability to work with colleagues to continue to provide safe, high quality, highly personalised care at Sherwood but we will want more from them than this. Their personal characteristics will be so important for this role. We want someone who is energetic and engaging, who is highly visible and models the values of kindness and compassion. You will be curious by nature and you will want to join a team that is already good and work with us to help us become great.  The successful candidate will be able to evidence they consistently deliver results and more importantly they deliver them in the right way.

Suzanne Banks, Chief Nurse, is retiring in December 2019 and earlier this year we appointed Julie Hogg, Deputy Chief Nurse at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, as our new Chief Nurse. Julie is a great appointment for Sherwood and we will expect our new Medical Director to form a strong, collegiate and supportive partnership with Julie and Simon Barton, Chief Operating Officer.

A key area of the role will initially be working within Sherwood, but overtime there will be an expectation that the Medical Director will be a senior influencer in the Mid Nottinghamshire Integrated Care Partnership. Over the last 12 months Sherwood has increasingly taken steps to work more closely with other health and local authority partners. The reason for this is we know the current ways of working will not be effective in the future as people and patients are too reliant on hospitals. Whilst progress against this agenda has initially been slow, we are beginning to see some successes.

Andy will continue to be the Medical Director and Deputy Chief Executive at Sherwood until we appoint and have in post a new Medical Director.

If you want to join a team that has already achieved a huge amount but also has its best times ahead of it, please contact me directly for a conversation: Richard.Mitchell2@nhs.net

Given the importance of this role, it is unlikely candidates will be taken through to the interview stage unless they contact me for a conversation in advance of shortlisting.

We are working to the following timeline:

  • Job goes live: Monday 30 September – we are not using a recruitment firm because I believe the job and the Trust will “sell itself”. The process will be absolutely open, fair and transparent and I want to attract a large field of strong candidates.
  • Job closes:   Friday 18 October
  • All candidates contacted to confirm if they have made the shortlist: COP Tuesday 22 October
  • Interviews: Wednesday 6 November
