A high profile NHS organisation is seeking to appoint an Interim Associate Director for Communications for a 6 month period in the first instance.
This is a key role within the organization and experience in a senior communications role within the NHS is essential. Experience of NHS crisis management PR and external communications is desirable.
This role will start ASAP and be remunerated under the NHSI Agency Caps at Band 8d.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Lead the development and implementation of the Trust’s overarching communications strategy, both internally and externally, along with the implementation of the Trust’s Public Involvement strategy to enable and drive the delivery of the Forward View and support the organisation through transformational change. This should include an annual plan of activity along with quarterly rolling calendars to ensure all activity is aligned and mutually reinforcing
  • Lead on the provision of effective internal and external communication services, including public engagement, and develop constructive and positive relationships with key external stakeholders
  • Ensure the provision of an effective press office and public relations service
  • Manage the Trust’s Freedom of Information function
  • Work with the Director of HR&OD on the provision of an effective internal communications and engagement strategy for staff
  • Identify any problems which may have strategic or reputational impact and devise handling strategies for these
  • Lead the organisation’s change communications and educate and enable others to use effective communications to support change; including providing advice to directors, clinicians and managers to enhance strategic partnerships across the Trust and the ICS in support of the Forward View
  • In conjunction with the Chief Finance Officer and Trust Secretary ensure that statutory annual activities, including preparation and presentation of the Annual Report and Accounts and the AGM, are undertaken with the necessary input from the Board, Chair and CEO and in compliance with statutory guidance.
  • Develop and implement a community engagement strategy to ensure our communities and patients are aware of the developments in the hospital
  • Oversee fundraising, and charitable links and patronage
A Successful candidate will have:
  • Educated to masters level or equivalent level of experience of working at a senior level in Communications and Engagement
  • Understanding of the communications and engagement functions and responsibilities in a large and complex organisation, with multiple stakeholders
  • Experience of senior level management and leadership in health and social care
  • Experience of change management and organisational improvement
  • Experience of working in or closely with an acute Trust and/or an Integrated Care System
  • Able to see the big picture, understand the strategic context and spot crosscutting themes
  • Possess exceptional communication skills, able to express complicated, multi-stranded concepts in an accessible way, both verbally and in writing
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and able to navigate complexity to get things done
  • Able to balance competing priorities, organise fast moving and wide ranging portfolio of work
