An outstanding opportunity has arisen following the creation of a new organisational structure for a talented and inclusive medical leader to join NHS Blood and Transplant as our new Medical Director, Transfusion, reporting into the Chief Medical Officer and Director of Clinical Service. The post of Medical Director, Transfusion will be critical to achieving our future aims. The role will have responsibility for providing medical leadership across blood transfusion liaising with the wider transfusion community. A large part of this role will be defining the optimal interface with hospitals. Candidates should be aware of the National Blood Transfusion Committee and NHSBT document Transfusion 2024; this role will be responsible for leading a change programme to deliver the NHSBT aspects of this programme. The post holder will be responsible for the medical workforce for this area of the business. A key element of this role will be to make R&D an integral part of the directorate and the post holder will be responsible for delivering a world class R&D programme through having a number of senior academics (Principal Investigators) as part of their team. As well as sitting on the Clinical Services Senior Management Team (SMT), they will also be a member of the Blood Supply SMT having a dotted line into the Director of Blood Supply. As this is a new role they will need to ensure that their team is structured appropriately to deliver on this demanding agenda.

To succeed in this post you will have a genuine partnership focused approach, enabling you to work effectively with clinicians and managers while developing strong relationships across the whole of NHSBT and the wider NHS. As a member of the Clinical Services SMT, you will also demonstrate the ability to work corporately, and using your wider strategic acumen to enable NHSBT to focus on key objectives. Your professional background will be as a consultant with some experience of transfusion and you will need substantial clinical and management experience. With a demonstrable commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, you will also have outstanding communication skills and an ability to build highly performing and functioning teams.
