A large NHS organisation is seeking to appoint an Interim General Manager for Planned Care for a 3 month period in the first instance.  This is a key role with the organization and experience in a senior operational management role within the NHS is essential preferably within Planned Care, Surgery, Critical Care or Peri-operative Care.

This role will be remunerated under the NHSI Agency Caps at Band 8b.

Main responsibilities:
  • Provide strong, visible, professional leadership and focus for the delivery of excellent care with compassion across the care group
  • Ensure the operational performance of the care group services are effectively managed to meet agreed objectives and targets
  • Work in close conjunction with the triumvirate to set and deliver the care group objectives, in line with Division and Corporate targets and strategies
  • Manage operational action plans to deliver income and expenditure (I&E) balance on the budget devolved within the care group
  • Monitor performance against all activity targets and other service objectives
  • Ensure that all national and locally agreed waiting times and bookings targets are understood and met
  • Take ownership of the operational delivery of cost improvement programme (CIP) work streams
  • Support in the delivery of the annual capacity and business planning process for the care group; this may include delegated responsibility for business cases which have been identified as required to strengthen or develop the service areas you are responsible for
  • Support the division triumvirate team in undertaking action planning for identified areas of improvement e.g. improved capacity planning of theatre lists / outpatient clinics / treatment areas / diagnostics, improved patient access, improved use of resources (drugs / medical equipment)
  • Develop a Service Delivery Plan (in partnership and by agreement with the Clinical team) to meet service needs and contribute to the annual planning process in line with agreed corporate objectives and priorities
  • Manage and coordinate the day to day operational flow of wards in conjunction with senior nurses and support services with the aim of ensuring every patient has a green day as part of the SAFER patient flow bundle

Key Skills/Experience:
  • Degree or equivalent level
  • Proven experience of managing a significant service budget
  • Up-to-date knowledge of NHS system reform policy and other key policy drivers. (Performance Management, operating Framework, capacity planning, payment by results, independent sector development and Foundation Trust issues)
  • Proven track record of successful and sustained management in an NHS Foundation Trust or similar organisation 
  • Successful delivery of significant organisational change
  • Evidence of a track record in change management
  • Experience of managing people and teams 
  • Experience in developing creative solutions to problems
