Become a leader of excellence

Define the vision of an outstanding School of Health Sciences with an international reputation.

Our mission is excellence in our education, impact in our research and an international outlook.

This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of a forward-thinking, highly regarded School. With world-leading research and cutting-edge facilities, Health Sciences at Southampton are exceptional. Nursing and Midwifery ranked 2nd in the UK and 5th in the world (QS World Rankings), and our Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy programmes were ranked 1st and 2nd respectively in the Sunday Times Good University Guide.

We’re proud to be a diverse and truly multidisciplinary School of approximately 1500 undergraduate and postgraduate students and 150+ healthcare professionals and specialists from a wide range of disciplines including Nursing and Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Podiatry, Cardiology and Social Sciences.

We’re now aiming to build on our reputation and take advantage of government investment to deliver an unrivalled education experience for students from across the globe.

You’ll further our dynamic, supportive learning community, expanding a vibrant student experience that educates tomorrow’s health care professionals. You’ll provide the School’s vision and enhance our reputation by working with other university leaders, promoting teaching excellence throughout the School while overseeing staff appointments, financial decisions and enterprise opportunities.

Taking on a permanent substantive role as a Professor, the Head of School responsibilities will approximate to 0.8 FTE, with a term of 5 years.

As well as a PhD (or equivalent professional qualifications/experience) in a relevant field, you’ll have an international reputation in research and enterprise with a profile and network to match.

An outstanding track record in education is essential and you’ll be committed to building a first-class student experience and community, putting academic and professional standards centre-stage. A strong and capable leader, you’ll also deliver a vision for the School consistent with our drive for excellence.

Based at our lively Highfield campus and University Hospital Southampton sites, you’ll have access to state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, as well as our sports complex, Hartley Library and Staff Social Centre. We support a flexible approach to work, as well as additional benefits that will make your life easier, such as a generous holiday allowance. We will support your long-term future too, with access to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), subsidised health and fitness facilities and a range of discounts.
