Working for Birmingham City Council is more than just a job – it's about making life better for the million people who live and work here. Our members and partners are providing the exciting and challenging influence we need to grow, to ensure that every child, citizen and place matters. With the foundations of a 21st Century Council, we’re focusing on our priorities of children, housing, health, jobs and skills. Now, we want you to come and help us become a truly modern council for our colleagues and our communities.

We are looking to appoint two new substantive Assistant Director of Public Health roles to join the Public Health Division and support an exciting growing agenda in a diverse and vibrant city

As the Assistant Director Public Health (Population Public Health), you will lead work across the dedicated life-course teams.  At the heart of this role is leading the public health division’s work engaging with health and social care partners within the Council and across the local system, you will lead key work to oversee the delivery of the mandatory public health functions, support the delivery of the health and wellbeing components of the NHS 10-year forward plan and the intersection with the Council Plan.

As the Assistant Director Public Health (Health Protection & Environmental Public Health), you will lead a new team bringing together our health protection functions and environmental public health functions and this will connect with the wider work of the Council on climate change and the built environment. You’ll ensure that we work in collaboration with Public Health England to protect local communities from threats to their health through infectious diseases, environmental and other public health hazards.

Both roles will be part of the wider Public Health Leadership Team and taking your position at the heart of the Extended Corporate Leadership Team, you will also deputise for the Director Public Health when required.

You will inspire those around you, igniting desire and drive to transform services, across the Council. The pace of progress must be rapid and sustainable, while the portfolio may change over time. This means that your constant adaptability and focus on delivery is critical. Ultimately, your leadership will improve the health and wellbeing of Birmingham’s residents, reducing inequalities in health outcomes.

To be successful in your application, you’ll be included in either the GMC Specialist Register, the GDC Specialist List or the UK Public Health Register. Alternatively, you’re within six months of gaining entry, or you hold the equivalent training and experience.

Crucially, you bring proven experience of strategic leadership and consistent achievement in a broadly comparable environment. And, you’re knowledgeable around leading significant programmes of transformational change which have major impact on people and processes, and achieve significant savings.

Birmingham City Council is committed to equal opportunities in employment and we positively welcome your application irrespective of your gender, race, disability, colour, ethnic or national origin, nationality, sexuality, gender identity, marital status, responsibility for dependants, religion, trade union activity and age.
