Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is one of UK’s largest, busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts, providing a complete range of hospital and community services for the people of Sheffield, as well as specialist care for patients from much further afield. Our circa 18,000 staff work both out in the community and in five of the country’s leading teaching hospitals. As a member of the Shelford Group, a collaboration between ten of the largest teaching and research NHS hospital trusts in England, we have a long history of providing high quality care and clinical excellence as well as an international reputation for innovation in medical research and education.

Our tradition of clinical, academic and scientific achievements has been strengthened by developing one of the UK’s first Academic Health Science Networks. We have an especially close partnership with the University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University and industry to ensure we remain at the forefront of advancements in clinical services, education and research. Equally important to us are the partnerships we have forged with local people, patients, partner NHS organisations, local authority and charitable bodies.

Our people are as important as patients and the populations we service, and if we are to become an outstanding organisation, we need to become a beacon of excellence; ensuring we care, develop, enable and lead our staff to reach their true potential. The Head of Education, Learning and Development is pivotal in us delivering this strategy.

This is a new role, taking the lead in merging two highly successful departments in the Trust, Medical Education and Learning and Development; to create an effective, customer and user focused business delivery unit. The postholder will work at the most senior levels within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, working closely with executive directors and senior clinical and operational leaders to lead the development of all of our people. Alongside this, will be the need to represent the Trust with partner organisations within the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw ICS, with academic partners, professional regulators, royal colleges and national bodies.

The best candidates will be able to evidence a strong track record of delivery and achievement, whatever their professional background. They will bring strategic skills, business acumen and political astuteness, with the ability to influence at the most senior levels, challenge and engage people, and ensure we secure the best possible value for our investment in our staff.

We are open to candidates from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds who bring intellect, commitment and energy and who have experience of working at a senior level in complex, commercial and customer focused environments. While prior NHS experience is not pre-requisite, a natural empathy with our organisational values is essential:

Patients first

Ensure that the people we service are at the heart of all that we do

Respectful

Be kind, respectful, fair and value diversity

Ownership

Celebrate our successes, learn continuously and ensure we improve

Unity

Work in partnership with others

Deliver

Be efficient, effective and accountable for our actions

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is an inclusive organisation and invites applicants from all backgrounds and we encourage you to review this site and speak in confidence, with Simon Green and Alex Sweet at Alumni Harvey Nash on 07545 741333, to explore this role further and discuss details of how to apply.
