Trust Chair

Stockport NHS Foundation Trust

Time Commitment: 22.5 hour a week

Term of Appointment: 3 years

Remuneration: £48,000 pa

Stockport NHS Foundation Trust is no ordinary Trust and we are looking for someone extraordinary to be our new Chair, and lead the organisation as it continues on its transformation journey at a time of rapid change in the local and national health and care system.

We hold a unique position in the Stockport community as the provider of hospital and community care to our population, and as one of the region’s largest employers. We play a key partnership role within Greater Manchester, Stockport and East Cheshire, and we are committed to taking advantage of opportunities for greater collaboration to improve the health and well being of our local populations.

Like many other NHS organisations, we face challenges in terms of improving the quality and performance of our services, while addressing our underlying financial position. We have made improvements to many services over the last few years, but we will not be satisfied until the care we provide to all our patients, every day, is of the standard we would want for our own families.

We are not content to just deal with the challenges of the here and now. We have ambitious plans for major changes to how and where care is delivered. In responding to the unprecedented challenge of the Covid-19 pandemic our staff have demonstrated every day their commitment to providing the best possible care for our patients. They have also been innovative in rapidly adopting new ways of working and changing how some of our services are delivered. We will harness that enthusiasm and commitment to help shape the delivery of our recovery and future plans.

This fast moving environment presents us with an opportunity to deliver our services in new ways; working across traditional boundaries and seeking innovative solutions that will help all parts of our health and social care system become truly integrated around the needs of our communities. We also know that the role of the hospital is changing, and we recognise the part we must play in preventing ill health.

It is with this complex background that we embark on the search for a new Chair who can lead the organisation on its continued transformation journey, as well as help to develop a relatively new but highly skilled and experienced Board of Directors at a time when there have been a number of recent changes to the Executive Team. This includes Karen James OBE taking on the role of Interim Chief Executive, and a new Medical Director and a Chief Nurse joining the organisation to help drive the Trust’s ambition to be a clinically led and managerially enabled organisation.

We are looking for an exceptional individual who can lead the Trust as it continues on its transformation journey at a time of rapid change in the local and national health and care system. As Chair of the Council of Governors, as well as Board of Directors, we are looking for someone who appreciates the democratic role of governors and value they can bring to the organisation through their links with the Trust’s population and key partner organisations.

We have identified new values for the organisation – We Care, We Listen, We Respect – and our new Chair will share and demonstrate those values, as well as having the skills and experience to support the Trust on its path to becoming an outstanding organisation.

As a suitable candidate you will have a clear commitment to the health and wellbeing of the people of Stockport and surrounding areas, be politically astute and well connected. With the skills and experience to operate in a highly regulated environment, while building strong collaborative relationships, internally and externally.

We expect that this role will be best suited to an experienced Non-Executive Director with knowledge and experience of the health and care system, but we are keen to attract candidates from broad backgrounds that reflect the diversity of the communities Stockport NHS Foundation Trust serves. If you have the skills and experiences outlined above, then we look forward to receiving your application.
