The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) is a ministerial department which sponsors and works with 15 Arm’s Length Bodies to deliver the Secretary of State’s duty to promote a comprehensive health service “designed to secure improvement in the physical and mental health of the people of England; and in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of physical and mental illness”. DHSC leads, shapes and funds health and care in England, making sure people have the support, care and treatment they need, delivered with the compassion, respect and dignity they deserve.

We are seeking a Director General - NHS Policy and Performance, a varied and challenging senior leadership role right at the heart of our ambitious agenda. Working as a key adviser to the Permanent Secretary you will lead a team of civil servants and expert advisers in driving forward a recovery and transformation agenda across the health and care system as we emerge from the coronavirus pandemic.

We are looking for someone who is motivated by the thought of gripping the challenges that this will bring and building relationships of trust across Government and the health care sector so that we can work well to deliver on such an important agenda for this country.

This mandate is large and complex and the role will require someone with the suitable skill and gravitas to achieve this. With full responsibility for leading on the breadth of policy across Acute, Mental Health, Primary and Community Health Care services, along with cross-cutting strategic workforce policy and the health and care reform agenda, you will need to be an outstanding policy leader with excellent judgement who is able to make critical decisions at pace whilst fostering the relationships between the centre of Government, the health and care system and other key partners. You will also will also contribute to the leadership of the Department alongside other members of the Executive Committee.
