Ref: 349-COR-357-21

With 750,000 residents in Manchester and Trafford, the challenge of providing a first-class integrated health and social care system, equipped to meet the needs of a large population, is both immense and fascinating.  Despite the challenge, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) is passionate about meeting it head-on.  As England's largest NHS Foundation Trust, we encourage our 25,000 employees to work collaboratively to deliver forward-thinking services.  As such, we embrace a culture of continuous improvement, resulting in progressive workplaces in which we rank our people as our most valuable asset and where you are able to pursue your interests, gain job satisfaction and provide the highest level of care for our patients and their families.

Our commitment to delivering high-quality, compassionate care has led us to our current state of evolution, from 1st April, North Manchester General Hospital was officially acquired into MFT, making this the tenth hospital in our Group, enabling us to reach even more patients, and further develop our reputation for delivering exceptional specialist services.

As such, we have two unrivalled and career changing opportunities to join us as Directors of Operations; located in two very different parts of the city, both wholly committed to delivering exemplary patient care.  And that’s where you come in.

North Manchester General Hospital/Managed Clinical Service

This truly is an exciting time to join North Manchester General Hospital. A once-in-a-generation opportunity will see our site rebuilt and the creation of a health hub within our grounds.

On 1st April 2021, we became part of the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. This will be the final piece in a plan that set out the benefits of creating a Single Hospital Service for the city of Manchester, uniting multiple hospitals and a provider of community services.

We are proud of our history, serving North Manchester communities since 1876. One of the first things you will realise when you join us is the community feel and the supportive and nurturing culture.  We are also excited and proud of the vibrant rejuvenation of the site.

Join us on our exceptional journey.  You’ll thrive in our open, inclusive and collaborative environment where everyone matters, and is respected for who they are.  We will help you to develop, and support you to deliver your very best work, while helping some of the communities most in need.

Wythenshawe, Trafford, Withington & Altrincham/Managed Clinical Service

This really is the best of both worlds. Join Wythenshawe, Trafford, Withington or Altrincham hospital, part of the powerhouse Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), and there’s so much on offer. Each hospital has its own unique specialisms, culture and feel about the place. WTWA is driving ‘a culture of Innovation, Improvement and Learning’ and as Director of Operations, you’ll play a crucial role in bringing to life.

We’re so proud of the four WTWA hospitals which are the main provider of acute care to the people of South Manchester, Trafford and their surrounding areas.    Wythenshawe Hospital, a large acute teaching hospital with specialist expertise including cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, heart and lung transplantation, complicated and life-threatening respiratory conditions, burns and plastics, cancer and breast care services.  Our teams always comment on the family feel they experience, with most of the team living in the local community.

Trafford Hospital isn’t just the birthplace of the NHS, it’s at the forefront of modern medicine and care.   Here, you’ll find outstanding inpatient and outpatient services specialising in orthopaedics, complex elderly care and stroke rehabilitation.  Like the other hospitals in the group, Trafford is known for its close-knit, team-spirited environment.

Different again is Withington Hospital.  A diverse, dynamic and team-spirited hospital with a wide variety of specialisms, including Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Urology, Audiology, ENT and Therapies. And last but not at all least, Altrincham Hospital; a modern, purpose-built, non-surgical unit with a real sense of camaraderie.

The scale of our hospitals really does drive opportunity for the ambitious innovative leaders out there.  it’s true to say we’ll welcomingly stretch you supportively in every way to grow and develop your skills and experience further.

The Roles

As a result of our existing Director of Operations retiring at WTWA and the need to make a substantive appointment to Director of Operations at NMGH, we’re seeking two passionate and inspired individuals to be responsible for the direct delivery of all patient services across their respective sites – two bold roles that will take your career and experience to another level.

Reporting to the respective Hospital Site Chief Executives, you’ll role model a values led compassionate style of leadership which promotes empowerment and ensures that decision-making is allocated to appropriate levels, allowing our teams to feel they make a valuable contribution, leading to a high performing, inclusive, open and transparent culture.  Using your management expertise, you’ll be accountable for all operational performance targets, including waiting lists, finance, quality of services to patients and work to improve services towards best practice standards, on time and within budget.

What’s more, you’ll work closely with the senior leadership teams to deliver MFT strategies, plans and objectives so collaboration and cohesive thinking will play a significant part in these roles.

About You

You’ll be both driven and tenacious with the ability to make positive contributions to the provision of health services across the Group and the local health and social care economy.  It goes without saying you’ll be highly experienced in consistently obtaining and achieving results and targets, and you’ll be eager for this new challenge.  With impressive evidence of effectively managing change, you’ll be focused to drive and improve performance in the service and in others. Your leadership style will be empowering, and you’ll be dedicated in successfully driving a learning coaching culture for all staff.   Carrying a vibrant ‘can do’ attitude, you’ll also mirror our values perfectly, with the skill and flexibility to operate at a high pace and overcome individual and organisational obstacles readily, positively and collaboratively.  Outstanding communication, negotiation and influencing skills will be imperative to your success.

Working within supportive senior leadership teams and with the chance to really develop your own skills in the role, you’ll witness your vision having a direct impact on the lives of thousands of people across Manchester and beyond.  Join an organisation that’s as ambitious as you are. We offer unparalleled career opportunities and it’s a huge bonus we’re positioned in one of the country’s most exciting cities.

So, if you’re ready to take on the next challenge of your career, and you have the relevant skills and knowledge to excel in this role, then we would be delighted to hear from you.
