Applications are invited for appointment as the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, from suitably qualified medical practitioners that are fully registered in the UK.

Overview

The Deputy Chief Medical Officers (DCMOs) provides direct professional support to, and, deputises for the CMO in their role as the chief medical adviser to the First Minister, the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport and the wider Ministerial team.  There will be two posts, based within the Scottish Government Health and Social Care Directorates, which also operates as the headquarters of NHSScotland.  Each postholder will report formally to the CMO and will have line management responsibility for staff including senior medical advisers operating across a range professional portfolios.  It is expected that each postholder will work collaboratively across the directorates in the Scottish Government, the NHS, the wider public sector and a range of professional networks.  There will be regular contact with senior colleagues across the Scottish Government and in the NHS.

The DCMOs will have direct involvement in discussions on a range of major policy issues.  Each one of the two DCMOs will have a separate portfolio of responsibility agreed with the CMO. Working closely with the CMO, the Chief Scientist (Health) together with a number of doctors (within the Civil Service and seconded from the NHS) and administrative colleagues it is expected that the Deputy CMOs will take lead responsibility on a range of issues as well as having the scope to develop areas of particular professional interest.  This will involve regular contact with a number of specialty advisers through the Specialty Adviser to the CMO (SACMO) Committee and a wide range of professional advisory networks.

 

This is a permanent and pensionable Senior Civil Service appointment.  If applicable, secondment from your existing employer on your current terms and conditions might also be considered.  Relocation expenses may be available.
