The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is the largest cancer treatment centre of its kind in Europe, and an international leader in cancer research and development.  As well as housing the largest early-phase clinical trials unit in the UK and one of the largest in Europe, it is also the first UK centre to be officially accredited as a comprehensive cancer centre.

The Christie works closely with the University of Manchester and Cancer Research UK through The Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC) led by Professor Rob Bristow.

We aspire to excellence across the integrated activities of cancer care, research, and education. A core objective is the development of the Christie workforce to maximise everyone’s potential and ensure that the Trust is responsive to the needs of our patients. Many clinical and scientific staff members have contributed to research, education and clinical developments, making The Christie proud to be responsible for having ‘world firsts’ and playing a crucial role in the advancement of cancer treatments and care for over 100 years.

Our vision is to be one of the world’s leading comprehensive cancer centres within the next 5 years. This means that we aim for excellence across the integrated activities of cancer care, research, and education.  This ambitious vision builds on The Christie’s strong relations with industry, academic partners, other NHS bodies and the communities it serves.

We are seeking a new Executive Medical Director to join our Board, to provide professional leadership to our doctors and lead clinical services that improve the health outcomes of our population and meet regulatory requirements.  In partnership with our Director of Nursing this role leads the clinical governance agenda and works closely with our University partners to ensure that research evidence informs our improvement work.  Operating with an experienced team, our Executive Medical Director has oversight across the Trust and facilitates collaboration between our clinical networks in primary and secondary health care services.  The role will be influential in building relationships internally and externally ensuring that our people, our patients, the media, and wider stakeholders are engaged in our future development.

The Executive Medical Director will report directly to the Chief Executive and work closely with the Deputy Chief Executive, Professor Chris Harrison.  As one of the most senior and influential leaders in the organisation, you will also work with senior clinical, academic, and managerial leads to align opportunities with our areas of strength and ambition in the UK and across the world.  The Executive Medical Director will be a visible champion within the Manchester health ecosystem for diversity and inclusion and widening access to services.

This is a highly visible, senior leadership role, and as such requires someone who is visionary and ambitious.  We are seeking to appoint an experienced medical leader who has contributed to improvements in patient outcomes and patient experience.  You will bring a track record of delivery with demonstrable ability in the effective engagement of clinicians as well as with a wide range of external stakeholders.  Bringing a strong strategic focus, you will quickly build strong relationships with our experienced Board as well as working closely with the wider Manchester health environment. You will have built an international profile and impact in oncology within a similar setting and have a track record in diversifying and growing talent.

This is an exciting, rewarding, and unique opportunity for an experienced medical leader to influence change in an ambitious, complex integrated healthcare environment.
