An exciting opportunity has arisen within a large NHS organisation for an experienced Infection Prevention and Control Lead Nurse.

The post will be working in London for 3 months, at a Band 7.

Responsible for delivering on all aspects of IPC nursing, providing specialist advice, support, and training to the organisation.

Main Responsibilities:
  • The post-holder will liaise with Ward Manager/Nurse-in-Charge/ward staff in each clinical area to assess and evaluate patient care in relation to prevention and control of infection and provide advice as appropriate;
  • Provide clinical expertise to promote and facilitate high standards of Infection Prevention and Control practice throughout the organisation;
  • Promote a high standard of specialist nursing by initiating and co-ordinating the assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of the needs of patients in relation to IP&C and through evidence-based practice following agreed policies, protocols, and guidelines;
  • Work clinically and demonstrate effective decision-making skills related to assessment of IPC elements of patient care;
  • Maintain a high profile in clinical areas and act as a role model without supervision, but under management of the Lead IP&C Nurse;
  • Use professional judgement in managing unpredictable care events;
  • Identify, investigate, and monitor specific alert organisms/conditions in addition to hazardous practices and procedures;
  • Clarify and explain microbiological results with implications for IP&C to ward staff;
  • Lead investigations via Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for serious infections such as MRSA and C difficile, in conjunction with relevant clinical staff and Consultant Microbiologist;
  • Identify and support the management of outbreaks of infection, performing a timely risk assessment and taking appropriate steps to escalate action in event of a major outbreak;
  • Contribute to preparation and presentation of reports for the Infection Control Committee;
  • Participate in tendering groups in matters pertaining to Infection Control e.g., waste management, catering, and site services;
  • Assist with the assessment of training needs within each clinical division and tailor training packages to meet those needs;
  • Maintain a peer network of support, information and learning with other nurse specialists at a local level;
  • Participate in the infection control audit programme, including audit of the clinical environment and clinical practices to minimise the risk of infection;
  • Collaborate with the IP&CD and other members of the IP&CT to develop/implement clinical policies/protocols and reports on outbreaks/other specific incidents of concern;
  • Contribute to the Infection Control Team in defining objectives, planning, and evaluating activities to improve the Infection Control service, utilising national guidance.
A successful candidate will have:
  • Must be a registered nurse, with a current NMC registration;
  • The ability to communicate effectively and consistently with a wide range of health and social care professionals across professional boundaries.
