Chief Medical Officer

St Helena Island, South Atlantic

3 years FTC available immediately

Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid.

The Health directorate employs 140 people full-time, inclusive of administrative staff. The 28-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care and patients with complex needs or requiring specialist interventions are referred overseas.

As you lead and manage the medical team on the island, you will identify and advise the Public Service on priorities, challenges, risks and strategies for improvement across all aspects of Clinical and Public Health Care.

With clinical responsibilities across health and social care, you will oversee standards in patient care. You will lead clinical audits and reviews, and monitor and evaluate health service plans. Responsible for medical reports and medico-legal assessments and provision of expert opinion, you must deliver improved clinical governance by identifying and minimising risk at a systematic level.

You will set objectives, supervise and educate as you research activities to train, coach, mentor and support staff, students and other stakeholders. You may be directly involved in succession planning. You will promote multi-disciplinary approaches, partner with social care services, up-skill and inform new ways of working and advise the St Helena Safeguarding Board from a medical perspective.

You should have a strong Clinical and Public Health background with knowledge of evidence-based standards of safe practices in a relevant field. You will have an understanding of medical and government legislation, policies and medico-legal compliance and also have a broad understanding of concepts/tools used in clinical leadership, management, audits, research, monitoring and evaluation, and clinical governance.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena.  As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.

Our Benefits Package Includes:

  • Salary c.£110,000, negotiable depending on experience.
  • An International Supplement, full details of which are in the Overseas Vacancy Information at www.sthelenacareers.co.uk
