An exciting new opportunity has arisen to work for an NHS organisation who are seeking to appoint an Interim Operations Manager Cancer and Oncology, for 3 months.

As this is a key position within the organisation, candidates must have significant experience of Operational Service Management. The successful candidate will also have experience of strategic planning, development, and delivery of high-quality cancer services.

The role is based in the West Midlands and will be remunerated under the NHSI Agency Caps at Band 8b.
Key responsibilities will include:
  • Assist in ensuring the organisation has clear plans in place to achieve Cancer Targets;
  • Responsible for the operational information systems and processes for cancer waiting times, monitoring, and reporting;
  • Oversee the implementation of, and compliance with, the NHS Long Term Plan;
  • Work closely with the Cancer Alliance and be the organisation’s day-to-day link with the Alliance;
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of internal and external key relationships with major stakeholders;
  • Manage Oncology Services, and be jointly accountable for the delivery of quality, safety, operational performance, budgetary management, and staff morale for the Cancer/Oncology team;
  • Make certain there are clear plans in place to achieve Cancer Targets;
  • Adapt and improve information systems and processes to ensure performance data is accurately captured and reported both to senior managers, clinicians and external bodies;
  • Work alongside Directorate Managers, Deputy Directorate Managers, Cancer Nurse Specialists and Clinicians to ensure the national and local cancer agenda is being considered and implemented within Directorates;
  • Engage clinical and non-clinical staff in the business of Cancer Services, building processes and systems around patient experience, ensuring delivery of excellent healthcare;
  • Develop and implement cancer initiatives such as the Day 28 Faster Diagnosis Standard, and Rapid Diagnostic Centres across all tumour groups, in line with national guidance;
  • Lead and encourage the transformation of services, and embed new ways of working which support patient care aims.
The ideal candidate will have:
  • A master’s degree, or equivalent professional experience;
  • Substantial experience of meeting performance targets;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the cancer performance targets including the challenges, initiatives, outcomes, and targets;
  • Demonstratable experience in day-to-day acute hospital operational management;
  • The ability to influence others in a positive and assertive way to achieve results;
  • Experience of leading the change in a complex environment;
  • Extensive staff management experience.
