An exciting opportunity has arisen, supporting a large NHS organisation as an IPC Matron.

The post will be based in Wales, initially on an interim basis for six weeks.

The post holder will have primary responsibility for the planning and delivery of the infection prevention service to non-acute areas of the organisation.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the purchase of some physical assets, and monitoring and overseeing use of resources;
  • Support the Specialist Matron Infection Prevention on one of the sites, deputising when needed to lead the team on the site;
  • Work in partnership with other members of the Infection Prevention Team and act as clinical nurse specialist in the development of evidence-based practice throughout all areas of the organisation;
  • In conjunction with other members of the team promote the organisation as a centre of excellence in the prevention and management of healthcare associated infection;
  • Responsible for the prevention, surveillance, investigation, and control of infection within the organisation and the local community, in the form defined within the IPC programme;
  • Display good communication skills on a wide variety of subjects when dealing with staff of all levels within the organisation, and when dealing with sensitive and complex situations;
  • Utilise highly developed specialist infection prevention knowledge as a result of suitable experience within infection prevention;
  • Act as a specialist clinical advisor on a range of complex infection prevention issues;
  • Contribute to the strategic planning of the Infection Prevention Service and the development of professional practice;
  • Liaise with clinical staff, manufacturers, representatives, suppliers, and equipment managers regarding products required to prevent and control infection.;
  • Identify and promptly investigate incidents of infection in hospitals (and in the community when necessary) with particular reference to source, spread and control;
  • Participate in the writing of Infection Prevention reports and the Infection Prevention annual programme.
A successful candidate will have:
  • A registered nurse with a professional NMC registration;
  • Professional knowledge acquired through degree, supplemented by specialist qualification in infection prevention and control, experience and short courses to master’s level equivalent;
  • Qualification/training in teaching and/or professional development;
  • Relevant post registration experience in infection prevention at a minimum band 6 within an acute healthcare organisation;
  • Clinical experience within acute healthcare, and ability to use experience in practice;
  • Evidence of recent experience advising and updating clinicians & others involved in patient care;
  • Proven experience of professional leadership in the clinical setting;
  • The ability to deliver to tight deadlines, and to rapidly switch between multiple pieces of work in order to respond to unpredictable service demands.
