Play a pivotal role as a compassionate and transformational leader, driving quality and exceptional standards of performance in our NHS for all our people and supporting the transformation of quality care, health outcomes and efficiency for our NHS patients.

Our National Health Service response to the coronavirus pandemic had been magnificent and has demonstrated the resilience of our people in facing the greatest challenge in its history both effectively and at pace.

Our ability to deliver services through exceptional leadership and a commitment to creating and leading a sufficient, capable and motivated workforce has been clear.

We will continue to operate at pace in a rapidly changing and commercially unpredictable environment to serve a public with complex health needs and high expectations of service.

Against this backdrop, the Board of NHS England and NHS Improvement are seeking an ambitious and inspiring leader to join Amanda Pritchard as the NHS Chief Operating Officer.

This is a unique role.

The scale and profile of this role should not be underestimated nor the impact and potential to be truly transformational. Delivering the role of NHS Chief Operating Officer for our NHS will indeed truly be a career defining experience.

We are therefore seeking to recruit a very experienced and strong senior leader who will be committed to delivering our vision and who will quickly gain credibility with our wide range of stakeholders.

The COO will lead on the following:

  • Operational delivery by the NHS in England including performance standards across all systems and regions.
  • Ongoing NHS emergency response to Covid and other EPRR incidents at both a national and regional level ensuring that appropriate plans are in place to support the delivery and recovery of NHS services.
  • Oversight and delivery of the Long-Term Plan, including the related strategies for urgent & emergency care, cancer, mental health, maternity and learning disability and other major clinical and operational strategies to address health inequalities and improve outcomes.

Candidates will be proven chief executives, with an exceptional presence and a record of leading major system integration and Service transformation, at scale. The ability to operate in a highly complex environment with multiple stakeholders is essential, along with a track record of building high performing inclusive teams and of developing diverse talent.

A high degree of resilience, the ability to deal with ambiguity and excellent communication skills are all essential attributes.

We would like to recruit a leader who communicates compassionately, thinks conceptually, shares power and risk and suspends ego to influence to engage and   motivate and who creates trust and loyalty.
