Description:

An exciting opportunity has arisen, supporting a large NHS organisation as a Head of Nursing – Theatres and Endoscopy.

The post will be working in London on an interim basis, for 3 months.

The post holder will lead the nursing and allied health professional workforce within the theatre and endoscopy directorate, supporting of the Director of Nursing and Associate Director of Nursing to deliver high quality care for patients.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Hold shared responsibility for clinical governance, operational delivery, clinical safety, and financial control;
  • Directly manage the Clinical Matrons and take responsibility for the delivery of safe and effective nursing care;
  • Undertake delegated responsibility from the Associate Director of Nursing for dedicated healthcare governance portfolio and specific group of clinical areas;
  • Aid the development of the directorate Clinical Matron by taking the lead responsibility for their development and ensuring that they receive appropriate training;
  • Evaluate directorate nursing costs against nursing performance by implementing nursing indicators across the directorate and actively use these to improve nursing performance and care standards;
  • Operationally/ professionally lead the nursing, nursing assistant and allied health professional team;
  • Directly manage the Matrons within the directorate, ensuring the annual reviews and effective development plans are in place and actively monitored;
  • Responsible and accountable for the delivery of a balanced budget for the area of responsibility;
  • Act as a professional resource and respond to emergency clinical incidents that warrant a senior presence and when necessary, take an active lead in the situation;
  • Chair formal disciplinary or capability hearings utilising expert critical analysis skills and acting penalty or dismissing officer if required;
  • Implement the strategic nursing vision by ensuring nursing processes and decisions facilitate a 'patient first' philosophy and incorporate all aspects of the identified corporate nursing values;
  • Responsible and accountable for the delivery of a safe and effective nursing service, and safe and effective nursing care are across the directorate;
  • Actively participate in the resolution of complaints, ensuring that learning is shared across the directorates and changes embedded in clinical practice;
  • Work in collaboration with the Clinical Director and General Manager to ensure that the patient pathway is optimised, and that timely discharge is achieved across the directorate;
  • Improve learning from incidents by taking the lead in the directorates management of incidents and by ensuring learning is shared and embedded in clinical practice;
  • Champion infection control across the directorate by ensuring that infection control practice is evaluated and that it is seen as a directorate priority;
  • Lead the development of nursing practice by commissioning and participating in audit and research across the directorate.
A successful candidate will have:

  • A Registered Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner;
  • A first level degree in relevant health related subject;
  • Substantial experience and achievement in a senior clinical role relevant to this post;
  • A mentorship qualification, or equivalent;
  • Evidence of delivering complex change involving wide engagement;
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge underpinned by theory and experience;
  • Demonstrable experience of people management;
  • Expert clinical and nursing knowledge within theatres and endoscopy speciality;
  • The ability to be emotionally resilient and work effectively in a rapidly changing environment.
