We are working with an NHS organisation in the South Coast of the UK who are looking to appoint a Transfusion Laboratory Manager. This role will be for 4 months in the first instance and has an expectation it could extend with a competitive rate.

The post holder will manage the Blood Transfusion department ensuring an expert level of accredited Transfusion Practice - in order to provide the patient a safe and rapid response to their Transfusion needs.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Formulate, develop, and implement clinical guidelines for Transfusion throughout the organisation and the Community;
  • Interpret and implement national and organisation policies, guidelines, and protocols within the department;
  • Key member of the hospital Transfusion Committee and Hospital Transfusion Team providing education and clinical advice to a cross-section of professional and support staff;
  • Authorise, interpret, and comment on test results and validate reports prior to issue to clinical staff;
  • Manage own workload and the workload of scientific and support staff in the department;
  • Examine and risk rate all clinical and technical Transfusion Incidents, recommending and implementing change in practice;
  • Communicate with other Service Providers, Tissue Services and the National Blood Service;
  • Manage the Electronic Blood Tracking system;
  • Ensure adequate blood supplies are maintained to meet critical needs by producing and implementing contingency plans;
  • Ensure and assess competency of all staff groups who collect or handle blood or blood products;
  • Plan the strategic development of the laboratory and clinical Transfusion service.
The ideal candidate will have:
  • BSC (Hons) in Biomedical Science or equivalent;
  • Registration with HCPC;
  • Minimum of 5 years post-registration experience working in a Haematology and Transfusion laboratory in the UK;
  • Continuing the learning process through academic or practical experience;
  • Ability to organise own workload and the day-to-day organisation and staffing of work section;
  • Possess highly developed technical skills and adept at all laboratory procedures.
