Job Details

An exciting opportunity has arisen, supporting a NHS organisation as a Director of Midwifery.
The post will be based in the West Midlands, on an interim basis for 3 months with a day rate of £522 - £537.

The post holder will be responsible and accountable for the management and professional leadership of all Midwifery and Nursing staff in the Maternity, Neonatal and Gynaecological services, including developing clinical leadership capability.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Provide expert midwifery and nursing advice about clinical issues to the Division, organisation Executive, the Divisional Board and throughout the organisation;
  • Advise on midwifery and nursing issues and be part of national working parties as required, with the LMS and advise the Chief Nurse, Midwifery and AHPs on the maternity transformation agenda and progress;
  • Ensure that patient care is delivered by all with care and compassion to a high standard, to ensure a positive patient experience and achievement of clinical quality standards;
  • Maintain a highly visible leadership profile, undertaking quality rounds and being proactive about engaging with service areas and patients and service users where required;
  • Provide and receive highly complex, sensitive information where there are barriers or difficulties to understanding or accepting the information;
  • Ensure that nursing, midwifery, AHP and care staff are suitably qualified, competent and maintain professional registration to deliver safe quality patient care;
  • Collaborate with staff, service users and the wider community to support and/or lead activities
  • aimed at improving mother and family experience;
  • Be accountable for the management of any formal or informal complaints received by teams under their leadership according to organisation standards, ensuring adherence to any Statutory Duties with regards concerns over standards of care;
  • Communicate clear and positive messages to staff across the organisation and key stakeholders;
  • With the Divisional Management Team develop and ensure a culture of performance management, improvement, and appraisal as a foundation for excellent organisational performance;
  • Working in partnership with the Families Division leadership team, develop the clinical strategy, including research, education, growth, and service provision;
  • Drive innovation and service improvement projects that contributes to the transformation of Maternity, Gynaecology and Neonatal services, providing both professional and clinical advice as necessary;
  • Undertake regular establishment and skill mix reviews to ensure that midwifery levels meet the complex and ever-changing demand;
  • Undertake regular establishment and activity reviews per clinical area and advice on staffing issues, acting where necessary to resolve;
  • Ensure own compliance and compliance of others regarding mandatory training and CPD requirements, maintaining records of training and development undertaken;
  • Ensure that training and education is provided for staff by competent and capable educators and that education programmes are updated and appropriate to meet current needs;
  • Lead in the development of and implementation of education and training programs and contribute to the organisation clinical education strategy as a professional lead.
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Registered practising Midwife (professional registration which is up to date);
  • Formal management qualifications or equivalent;
  • Master’s degree or equivalent level experience;
  • Evidence of continuing personal development;
  • Post graduate Leadership Qualification or equivalent experience;
  • Up to date understanding of current NHS agenda challenges and developments, and key issues/policies in midwifery, maternity;
  • Experience in working independently to interpret national nursing/midwifery policy/ guidance; Experience in staff management, leadership, and clinical supervision;
  • Ability to work successfully as part of a team in a complex and challenging environment;
  • Ability to empower and motivate staff at all levels to achieve.
