Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBH) are a large acute and community integrated healthcare provider, serving around 600,000 people across Sandwell and West Birmingham. With over 7000 valued colleagues we are also an anchor organisation for our local community.

We have always aspired to be more than a hospital. In fact, we have always aspired to be more than a healthcare provider. Our vision has been to become renowned as the best integrated care organisation in the NHS. This is because we have always believed that by working seamlessly with our population, our people, and our partners we can “Improve the Life Chances and Health Outcomes of our Population”. This is our purpose. To support these goals, we have identified three strategic objectives – Our People, Our Patients, and Our Population.

The Trust currently operates from two main hospital sites – City and Sandwell, with over 150 additional community locations. We are also in the process of developing our new hospital, now named the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH). MMUH will offer maternity, children’s and inpatient adult services to half a million people in a state of the art facility. MMUH’s location in Smethwick leads the way in social and economic regeneration for our communities, supporting a better quality of life. MMUH also presents a once in a generation opportunity to transform care delivery and our workforce.

Within and beyond the walls of our new hospital, we are transforming how we deliver care. We have already implemented our new electronic patient record, Unity. Our next five years will see more investment into Community Care as part of our big picture approach to delivering care, known as the Acute Care Model, as well as more investment into our own Clinical Research to benefit our local population.

It is to this exciting but challenging backdrop, that we now embark on the process to appoint our Chief Operating Officer (COO). The COO will be responsible for leading our acute hospital services and managing our clinical groups. They will also lead our digital journey at Trust Board level over the next five years, with responsibility for implementing both our system optimisation work and engaging the Board to invest in our Digital ambitions. In partnership with the Chief Development Officer, the postholder will also play a pivotal role in implementing our new acute care model, in advance of the occupation of the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital.

We are seeking an exceptional candidate who can manage and navigate complex agendas. You will be a compassionate, inclusive and visible leader, who can help us foster a culture of leadership and innovation within the Trust. You will be a strategic thinker, with experience working at a senior level and across a range of services and of overseeing complex service change. You will also bring knowledge and insights into digital transformation and how this can be harnessed at both organisation and system level. Most importantly, you will share the values and ambitions of our Trust.

We are committed to ensuring that across the Trust, our colleagues reflect the diverse population of our communities.
