We are working with an NHS organisation in the East of the UK who are looking to appoint a Head of Midwifery. This role will be on a Fixed Term Contract for 12 months.

The hourly rate will be competitive, based on your experience.

The post holder will be responsible for the strategic direction and overall provision and management of the midwifery services within the acute and community setting, ensuring the delivery of consistently high standards of care.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Provide professional expert midwifery knowledge and leadership to the midwifery team, demonstrating a commitment to the development of midwifery practice;
  • Provide innovative, professional leadership, expert midwifery advice to the Division, Director of Nursing and the Board of Directors, from both the professional and operational perspective;
  • Develop new models of practice aligned to modernising midwifery care and changes to the maternity services;
  • Ensure effective delivery of Statutory Supervision of Midwifery is provided to agreed standards in collaboration with the contact supervisor and the LSA officer ensuring all midwifery practice is consistent with the NMC standards;
  • Lead the midwifery team in the modernisation of maternity services identifying potential changes and role redesign working with senior midwifery managers to implement and support change and develop services, drive innovation and develop staff, policy and practice to deliver best current practice;
  • Work in partnership with the Trusts Senior Nursing Team to develop and implement the Trusts Nursing and Midwifery Strategy. Effectively communicate strategy through the organisation and across the wider healthcare community;
  • Undertake an annual review of Midwifery establishments to determine appropriate staffing levels to meet service needs in line with recommended midwifery staffing ratios;
  • In partnership within the Divisions Management Team, Clinical Lead, Lead Nurse and midwives develop and lead programmes to measure and improve quality of services provided;
  • Identify different ways of working to ensure efficient and effective service provision that meets national and local targets;
  • Drive change where needed, to create a culture that acknowledges professional trends and responds quickly and positively to National Policies and local demands;
  • Provide expertise and support to the Divisional leaders in identifying drivers for change, opportunities for growth, improvement and redesigning of maternity services and initiation of strategic implementation plans;
  • Work in conjunction with Clinical Director, Divisional Manager and Senior Midwifery managers to implement operational, strategic leadership and management of maternity services;
  • Work with the Divisional team to implement strategic change affecting delivery of services within the division;
  • Ensure safe standards of midwifery are delivered ensuring the Divisions clinical governance objectives are met;
  • Ensure that midwifery practice is compliant with national standards and external regulations i.e. CGC and NICE;
  • Actively participate in the clinical governance and risk management agenda in line with Divisional and Corporate objectives.
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Registered Midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council;
  • Able to demonstrate up-to-date clinical expertise and competence and expert proven knowledge of Maternity services;
  • Ability to work clinically in Maternity services providing credible clinical and operational leadership;
  • Evidence of leading nursing services;
  • Currently working within Midwifery services;
  • Demonstrates evidence of well-developed clinical practice;
  • Able to advise on and implement improvements to the quality and efficiency of care for patients in wards/units and specialities across Maternity, Gynaecology and Sexual Health services.
