West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust

Executive Director of Nursing

VSM

2 days per week

West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS FT serves a population of 5.6 million people covering an area of more than 5,000 square miles made up of Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Coventry, Birmingham and Black Country conurbation. The West Midlands is a hugely diverse area and covers the second largest urban area in the country (Birmingham, Solihull and the Black Country) while over 80% of the area is rural. We are also the second most ethnically diverse region in the country after London. With approximately 7000 staff we serve the population from our 15 preparation hubs across the region, responding to around 4000 ‘999’ calls every day, as well as providing almost 1 million non-emergency patient journeys each year.

We are a fast paced and ambitious organisation, with a reputation for delivering high quality services, which includes being the UK’s only CQC ‘Outstanding’ rated ambulance service. As we continue to evolve and progress as an organisation, we have an exciting opportunity for a talented individual to join our Board as the Director of Nursing.

As the Executive Director of Nursing, you will be the lead for all aspects of Health and Safety, Clinical Information, Safeguarding, clinical risk and risk management, and infection prevention and control.  This is a broad clinical strategic leadership portfolio to ensure the continued provision of high quality, safe, and sustainable patient care, working closely with the Medical Director and Patient Safety Director (lead Paramedic).

This is a unique opportunity for a current registered Nurse, with strategic leadership experience and professional knowledge in a range of disciplines, to provide clinical expertise to the long-term strategic planning of the Trust. A skilled communicator and natural team player, you will have a demonstrable track record of delivering strategic programmes of work in partnership with a range of stakeholders, and be adept at influencing both within an organisation and externally across the health and social care landscape. You will be highly proficient in regulatory standards and have experience of implementing clinical system and practice redesign. Most of all, you will share our values, be committed to developing a diverse and inclusive organisation and be focused on continuous improvement and innovation, as we strive to continue delivering an outstanding service to our communities served.

We want our Board to be as inclusive and diverse as possible, and we look for individuals who bring lived experience that equips them both for the leadership aspects of the role, but also brings an understanding of some of the challenges faced by our local communities.

West Midlands Ambulance Service positively welcomes diversity and aims to be a truly inclusive place to work. We are looking for self-motivated, enthusiastic people from all backgrounds that care about making a difference. The Trust is currently under-represented in terms of people from BME backgrounds and welcomes applicants from these communities. Selection will be on a basis of merit. The Trust has achieved the status of a Disability Confident Leader and guarantees to invite to assessment applicants who meet the criteria for the job vacancy. To ensure the diversity of the workforce and understand the differing needs of our communities, the Trust is committed to the principles of Positive Action. The Trust is proud to support our Armed Forces community and have signed up to the Step Into Health initiative. We welcome applications from Armed Forces Veterans and Service leavers.
