Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBH) are a large acute, community and primary care integrated healthcare provider, serving around 600,000 people across Sandwell and West Birmingham. With over 7000 valued colleagues we are also an anchor organisation for our local community.

We have always aspired to be more than a hospital. In fact, we have always aspired to be more than a healthcare provider. Our vision has been to become renowned as the best integrated care organisation in the NHS. This is because we have always believed that by working seamlessly with our population, our people, and our partners we can “Improve the Life Chances and Health Outcomes of our Population”. This is our purpose. To support these goals, we have identified three strategic objectives – Our People, Our Patients, and Our Population.

The Trust currently operates from two main hospital sites – City and Sandwell, with over 150 additional community locations such as Rowley Hospital and Leasowes. We are also in the process of developing our new hospital, now named the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH). MMUH will offer maternity, children’s and acute inpatient adult services to half a million people in a state of the art facility. MMUH’s location in Smethwick leads the way in social and economic regeneration for our communities, supporting a better quality of life. MMUH also presents a once in a generation opportunity to transform care delivery and our workforce.

Within and beyond the walls of our new hospital, we are transforming how we deliver care. We have already implemented our new electronic patient record, Unity. Our next five years will see more investment into Out of Hospital Care and partnership working across PLACE as part of our big picture approach to delivering care, as well as more investment into our own Clinical Research to benefit our local population.

It is to this exciting but challenging backdrop, that we now embark on the process to appoint a Group Director of Nursing for our Primary Care, Community and Therapies Group. This is one of a number of leadership roles that have recently arisen within SWBH, largely due to promotion and career progression.

The PCCT Group is a large and diverse Group, led by a leadership ‘Quad’. As part of this Quad the Group Director of Nursing will lead, inspire and deliver our patient strategy framework ‘Fundamentals of Care’. In partnership with the Group Director of Operations, they play a leading role in the development and implementation of both the Group and Corporate Strategy.

The postholder will have a pivotal role to play in relation to the Trust’s Out of Hospital agenda and an opportunity for innovation and transformation in relation to pathways and services. They will also work closely with partners across the wider system, as part of the Sandwell Place Based partnership which SWBH hosts.

In addition to this, the Group Director of Nursing will also have an opportunity to support forward planning in advance of our occupation of MMUH and ensuring our community & primary care strategies, services and pathways are well aligned to wider Trusts.

We are seeking an exceptional candidate who can manage and navigate complex agendas and who brings knowledge of the full patient pathway.

You will be a compassionate, inclusive and visible leader, who can provide clinical leadership which inspires, motivates and empowers Nurses within the Group and across the Trust.

You will be able to think strategically, with experience of working at a senior level and across a range of services and of overseeing complex service change. Most importantly, you will share the values and ambitions of our Trust.

We are committed to ensuring that across the Trust, our colleagues reflect the diverse population of our communities.
