Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBH) are a large acute, community and primary care integrated healthcare provider, serving around 600,000 people across Sandwell and West Birmingham. With over 7000 valued colleagues we are also an anchor organisation for our local community.

We have always aspired to be more than a hospital. In fact, we have always aspired to be more than a healthcare provider. Our vision has been to become renowned as the best integrated care organisation in the NHS. This is because we have always believed that by working seamlessly with our population, our people, and our partners we can “Improve the Life Chances and Health Outcomes of our Population”. This is our purpose. To support these goals, we have identified three strategic objectives – Our People, Our Patients, and Our Population.

The Trust currently operates from two main hospital sites – City and Sandwell, with over 150 additional community locations such as Rowley Hospital and Leasowes. We are also in the process of developing our new hospital, now named the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH). MMUH will offer maternity, children’s and acute inpatient adult services to half a million people in a state of the art facility. MMUH’s location in Smethwick leads the way in social and economic regeneration for our communities, supporting a better quality of life. MMUH also presents a once in a generation opportunity to transform care delivery and our workforce.

Within and beyond the walls of our new hospital, we are transforming how we deliver care. We have already implemented our new electronic patient record, Unity. Our next five years will see more investment into Out of Hospital Care and partnership working across PLACE as part of our big picture approach to delivering care, as well as more investment into our own Clinical Research to benefit our local population.

It is to this exciting but challenging backdrop that we now embark on the process to appoint a Chief Allied Health Professional (AHP). This is one of a number of leadership roles that have recently arisen within SWBH, largely due to promotion and career progression.

The Chief Allied Health Professional (AHP) has overall professional accountability for AHPs and are responsible for setting the strategic direction for AHPs across the Trust. This is an important and significant role. The post holder has a corporate professional role as a key member of the Trust’s strategic, operational and clinical structures and will also represent the trust locally, regionally and nationally in relation to AHPs. The post holder will report to and be part of the Chief Nursing Officers Team.

The Chief AHP will provide a visible, accessible and professional presence at clinical and corporate levels, delivering advice, support, innovation and professional leadership across the AHP workforce, inspiring, motivating and empowering AHPs to deliver effective person centred services. They will also operate as a change agent within the Trust and the wider system, translating national strategy into operational delivery and ensuring AHPs contribute to organisational initiatives and strive for continuous service improvement.

You will be a compassionate, inclusive and visible leader, who can provide clinical leadership which inspires, motivates and empowers clinicians across the Trust.

You will be able to think strategically, with experience of working at a senior level and across a range of services and of overseeing complex service change. Most importantly, you will share the values and ambitions of our Trust.

We are committed to ensuring that across the Trust, our colleagues reflect the diverse population of our communities.
