The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) currently has an exciting opportunity for a Director of Health & Social Services. The successful candidate will be responsible for the effective delivery of the strategic and operational management of all the work of the Health and Social Services Directorate.  

The Role

The Director will play a major part in embedding the vision, aims and objectives of the Islands’ plan which sets out the Government’s expectations and aspirations for the Health and Social Services provision here in the Islands for the community it serves.  

The services themselves follow UK practices and standards of care modified and changed to meet local needs and circumstances. The Director will also be responsible for continuing to reinforce the application of best practice across the Directorate and enabling services to improve their effectiveness, whilst at the same time maintaining the highest standards of performance across those diverse and vital services in a manner that encapsulates and allows for a continued focus on a culture of person-centred care.

As a member of the Corporate Management Team, the Director also fully contributes to, and participates in, the setting of the Government’s wider strategic direction and works closely with other Corporate Directors to ensure effective cross-service coherence. 

The Person

The successful candidate will be educated to degree level (or equivalent) in a related subject with substantial (10 years +) recent relevant experience in a leadership role within the UK’s NHS or similarly complex organisation. Experience of managing and developing diverse service areas which are responsive to users’ needs, requirements and preferences is also essential.  As is ‘hands-on’ experience of effective problem-solving and taking an innovative and pragmatic approach to service delivery.

The individual best suited to this key senior management position will have a proactive, flexible and enthusiastic ‘can do’ attitude providing senior leadership to a multi skilled team accountable and responsible for service deliverables along with proven experience of using strategic thinking to deliver complex, wide-ranging and effective organisational development.

The Package

  • Fixed Term Contract, up to 4 years.
  • Starting Salary £78,103 to £89,628 per annum (depending on qualifications and experience) rising to £96,395.
  • Eligibility for a 25% (taxable) Gratuity, paid upon successful completion of contract.
  • 41 days paid leave, 30 days leave annual leave and 11 public holidays. Relocation Allowance, to help with moving costs.
  • Flights Package for you and recognised dependents at the beginning and end of contract, and additional annual return flights contingent on the duration of the contract
