We are working with an NHS organisation who are seeking to appoint an Interim General Manager - Surgery. This role will be for 3 months in the first instance and has the potential to extend. The organisation are looking for someone who could start ASAP.

This is an interim role that falls under the Workforce Alliance Framework and should be expected to be remunerated at a day rate c£375 per day dependent on experience.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Direct operational management and organisation of clinical services across Surgery;
  • Accountable for delivering an efficient and highly performing Non-Elective Service, maximising elective activity in General Surgery with specific focus on meeting all patient access targets, both Cancer and RTT performance;
  • Active member of the Divisional team in terms of overall service development and strategic plans;
  • Lead the recovery of services post COVID-19 and respond to further challenges related to the backlog created by COVID-19;
  • Ensure waiting lists are managed in line with national and local policy and guidance ensuring that access targets are achieved;
  • Participate in the manager of the day bed rota within Division;
  • Performance manage the specialities to ensure the achievement of all objectives agreed with the General Manager and contained in the Operational Plan, initiating corrective action where required to meet activity and access targets, to achieve financial balance.
  • In collaboration with clinical leads; develop and deliver productivity targets.
  • Ensure sufficient data availability within the Division to monitor and track performance and to   satisfy reporting requirements.

The ideal candidate will have/be:

  • An appropriate post-graduate management qualification (MBA, MSc, DMS).
  • Proven experience of operating both strategically and operationally;
  • At least 3 years’ experience of operational management in an NHS setting or other large public sector organisation including accountability for a significant budget;
  • Knowledge of the duties imposed on the Trust by legislation, NHS policy and priorities, and the requirements of corporate governance;
  • Awareness of national NHS policy, local health community issues, the national performance management framework and national initiatives for achieving improved performance;
  • A clear understanding of the modernisation agenda, the opportunities for redesigning services and the tools and techniques for achieving service change including demand/capacity analysis and process mapping;
  • Experience of working effectively in a multi-professional environment and working as part of a multi-professional team.
