This is an exciting role, leading an organisation that operates across the two counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire, delivering mental health and community services from cradle to grave.  Do you have the leadership capabilities, the motivation and the right values to be that person? If yes, then please read on!

Our trust has an excellent workforce, but as with all NHS providers we are not without our challenges; recruitment and retention, rising demand for all services, ensuring effective system working and an ever-challenging budget to name but a few! As Chief Executive you will lead a staff of over 4,500 people and those people, along with the patients they serve are our focus, a focus that must be unrelenting and long term.

In January 2024, the CQC published their inspection report, which reduced our overall Trust rating from good to requires improvement. From the initial verbal feedback that we received following their Well Led inspection, the Trust has been focused on our improvement plan. Areas identified for improvement covered: culture, equality and diversity (specifically race), governance processes, constructive challenge at Board and risk management.  Linked to this is our Trust Improvement Plan. We began work immediately after the inspection rather than waiting for the full report as we knew we had things to work on.  The most significant piece of work we have undertaken is launching our ambition to create a compassionate and inclusive culture that is felt consistently across the organisation.

As our most senior leader you will display a very inclusive and open style of leadership that encourages the engagement of all staff groups and your actions will strongly encourage diversity in all its senses; the more diverse our staff the more diverse our thinking which in turn will lead to the innovations that will sustain our organisation into the future. You’ll be joining a Board which is well-established and has a real diversity of backgrounds but it will be your leadership style and drive that will be at the forefront of refreshing our strategy in 2025 to ensure we continue to deliver our vision: Working Together for Outstanding Care.

We are a complex trust delivering a diverse range of services from over 100 locations across our two counties. We provide mental health and learning disability services across Herefordshire and Worcestershire and a wide range of community services, including seven community hospitals across Worcestershire. We are the only NHS provider in our ICS footprint for mental health and learning disability services.

We are a well-established local provider that engages widely with our colleagues, patients, carers and local partners to deliver our system strategy – do you have the personal skills and attributes to work effectively with these partners? We listen to patient feedback and experiences to ensure that we develop innovative and sustainable services that provide excellent care to meet their needs and we constantly strive to improve – you will be the leader of these improvements whilst also being a key member and likely designated mental health lead on the Integrated Care Board.

The patients we serve live across two counties and often in rural and remote areas which brings additional challenges. The counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire are stunning landscapes containing areas of outstanding natural beauty and the iconic Malvern Hills. There is real diversity from the historic industrialised areas in the north of Worcestershire to the rural serenity of the south of the two counties; the remoteness of the Herefordshire border with Shropshire and Wales in the west to the sheer beauty of the Cotswold escarpment on our eastern extremity.

With the diversity of landscapes comes the diversity of communities and the successful candidate will have a good understanding of how these different communities can provide different challenges in delivering high quality services.

If your values match our values, if you believe in the diversity of a workforce, if you have a strong and unwavering belief in improvement and you have the leadership capabilities to deliver in the challenging NHS provider environment, then I’d really welcome your application and look forward to speaking and meeting with you.
