Rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and Ofsted, North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust provides 24 hour, 365 days a year Urgent and Emergency Care to those in need of immediate medical treatment and where necessary transport to the most appropriate receiving hospital/centre. As the largest integrated Ambulance Service in the UK, our 8000 staff and volunteers in over 300 different roles serve a population of more than 7.5 million people across Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire and part of Derbyshire. Each year we receive approximately 1.4 million 999 calls, respond to just under 1 million emergency incidents and make more than 1.4 million patient transport journeys for those who require non-emergency transport to and from healthcare appointments. We also deliver the regional NHS 111 service across the region for people who need medical help or advice, handling around 1.7 million calls every year.
Our hazardous area response team (HART) and resilience teams are specially trained and equipped paramedics to provide ambulance response to high-risk and complex emergency situations, including major incidents. They respond to major incidents to deliver our statutory responsibilities as a Category 1 responder under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004.
Following six successful years, our Chair, Peter White, will be stepping down in March 2025, and we are seeking to appoint a new Chair to lead our Board during a critical time for our Trust as we look to further improve and shape the future of urgent, emergency and planned care in the North West. As healthcare needs evolve, we must adapt and innovate. Connected by our core purpose which is to help people when they need us most and underpinned by our values—working together, being at our best, and making a difference—guide all our actions, ensuring we deliver compassionate care and improve outcomes and experiences for our people, patients, and communities.
We are looking for an outstanding, visible and values-driven leader. A strategic thinker with extensive senior Board level experience in complex, regulated and person-centred environments; comfortable in operating at scale. Given our geography across the North West, we play a leading role in regional and national partnerships. Our new Chair will be a collaborative and influential leader, skilled at building strong partnerships and inspiring others to embrace change and integration in healthcare provision and should live in or have strong connections with the area served by the Trust.
Your strong focus on equality, diversity and inclusion will be critical and you will hold the interests of patients and the wellbeing of our staff and communities at the heart of your leadership. Our new Chair will be an ambassador for NWAS, a visible leader capable of building effective relationships with a diverse range of individuals and groups within the organisation and with our many external partners.
