Job Details

We are seeking an experienced Interim Head of Income and Costing to support an NHS Trust for an initial 6 month assignment. This is a critical role within the Finance Directorate, ensuring robust income reporting, financial planning, and cost analysis to support operational and strategic decision-making.

The role is based in the South East of the UK, will start ASAP and will be at NHS Agency Capped rates for Band 8c, hybrid working is available.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead on all aspects of income and costing, ensuring accurate reporting and forecasting in line with NHS financial frameworks;
  • Manage the Service Level Agreement (SLA) process, Payment by Results (PbR), and other NHS funding mechanisms;
  • Oversee Patient-Level and Reference Costing to support service improvement and financial efficiency;
  • Work closely with operational and clinical teams to provide insightful financial analysis;
  • Support the annual planning cycle, business cases, and contract negotiations with commissioners;
  • Ensure compliance with NHS England and NHS Improvement guidelines, including national costing standards;
  • Lead and develop a small team, ensuring high-quality financial management and reporting.
Essential Requirements:
  • NHS finance experience at a senior level, particularly in income and costing;
  • Strong technical knowledge of NHS financial flows, costing methodologies, and income reporting;
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to engage with clinicians and senior leaders;
  • Experience with NHS costing systems and reporting tools;
  • Professional accountancy qualification (CCAB or equivalent) is desirable.
